Report by Y.R. Narcissov at the scientific seminar of the Perm National Research Polytechnic University
On September 25th, 2023, Y. R. Nartsissov, the head of the mathematical modeling sector, presented a talk on the topic of "Description of Spatiotemporal Distributions of Glucose Concentration in a Neurovascular Unit Using a Multicomponent Reaction-Diffusion Model with Convection" at a scientific seminar on biomechanics at Perm National Research Polytechnic University.
During the seminar, participants were introduced to the specific aspects of using a multiscale approach to assess the impact of blood flow parameters in capillaries on nutrient concentration gradients near the vascular wall. It has been demonstrated that a rapid reduction in the rate of blood flow in a capillary leads to an elevation in glucose levels within the surrounding tissue, provided that the ends of astrocytes, forming the blood-brain barrier (BBB), are in close contact.
The approach proposed in this study can be utilized to describe spatiotemporal nutrient gradients, not only for glucose, but also for other nutrients within the neurovascular unit and other human and animal tissues.
