Biography Podoprigora Gennadiy Ignatievich

G. I. Podoprigora was born on March 22, 1942, in Samara (former Kuibyshev). In 1965 he graduated the 2nd Pirogov Moscow State Medical Institute cum laude. After graduation he worked at the USSR AMS Laboratory of experimental biological models as a head of a gnotobiology group, and from 1985 till 1987 as head of the Laboratory. In 1987 – 1994 he headed the Department of Immunology in the Martsinovskiy Institute of Medical Parasitology and Tropical Medicine.

Since 2001 he has been working at the Institute of Cytochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology (since 2003 as a deputy director for scientific work). In 2011 he holds a position of director of the Institute.

In 1979 G. I. Podoprigora was elected by the international committee as an immunologist for the Headquarter of WHO (Geneva, Switzerland), where he led the international programs and projects in immunology, allergology and standardization of immunological and biological products, trained specialists in immunology, and etc., till 1984. For a number of years, he was elected as a member of the International Union of Immunological Societies executive committee for the standardization; also he coordinated the activities of WHO international research and reference centers in different countries. During the Perestroika G. I. Podoprigora headed the section of laboratory animals in an International Complex program of scientific and technical progress in biotechnology. As a WHO expert and a visiting professor he was giving lectures and was involved in the research projects at the number of universities in Europe, Asia and America: Switzerland (Zurich University), USA (National Institute of Health), Thailand (Mahidol University, Bangkok), Sweden (Karolinska Institute, Stockholm), France (University of Franche-Comte), Germany and other countries. At the invitation of the National Research Foundation of Brazil from 1994 till 2000, G. I. Podoprigora worked as a professor at the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Belo Horizonte (Brazil). He was awarded the grants of the International Science Foundation (USA), the National Science Foundation of Brazil (CNPq, FAPEMIG), and the National Science Foundation of France.

He was elected as a member of a number of international expert committees, editorial boards of scientific journals.

He is one of the founders of modern gnotobiology. He developed the first domestic original equipment and technology for breeding of different gnotobiote animals, which became the basis of original researches of the role of microbial factors in congenital and acquired immunity. He also trained four candidates of medical sciences and a number of specialists, both in Russia and abroad. G. I. Podoprigora is a member of the American Association of gnotobiology; he also is a member of the International Association of gnotobiology and was a member of its Board of Directors.

His research and educational work mentioned in an international biographical publication Who's Who in the World (1998).

In the Institute of Cytochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology G. I. Podoprigora organized Russian-French scientific collaboration.

He is author of over 230 scientific papers, including 5 monographs and guidelines, and has a number of patents.

G. I. Podoprigora is winner of the Pirogov Medical University prize. Also, he was twice awarded the Expert of Health sign.
